The US Justice Department has officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to block the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, targets the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major response by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
